Ensenada, Baja California

Called “The Beautiful Cinderella of the Pacific” and the “Capital of Mexican Wine,” Ensenada is the largest municipality in Mexico and one of its main tourist spots.

The city is located in southern California and is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Its vast physiography, flora and fauna, both terrestrial and marine, make it an attractive destination for nature lovers and outdoor activities. Many travelers come looking for the waves of its coast, the regional gastronomy, its natural attractions, and the possibilities it offers for active tourism.

Ensenada's climate is dry Mediterranean, with very little rainfall that occurs between November and February. On the other hand, the warmest and driest months are from June to September, with an average annual temperature of 22°C. It's worth noting that the hottest season in the region occurs at the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Due to its location, Ensenada's climate is influenced by the cold California Current as well as the Pacific Ocean.

What Places Can I Visit?

First Street and Costero Blvd.

First Street (López Mateos Avenue), located in downtown Ensenada, is a pleasant area for strolling, shopping, and getting to know the city. Next to First Street is Costero Blvd. and the Malecón, where the Ventana al Mar (Window to the Sea) and Civic Plaza are located. These two large esplanades are a great place for families to eat, relax, listen to live music, ride bikes, have fun with clown shows, watch illuminated fountain events, and much more.

Riviera Cultural Center

The Riviera Cultural Center was built in the 1930s as a casino and remained that way only for its five years of opening, with most of its guests being Americans fleeing the restrictive Prohibition. The building is located on Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard and, curiously, it was this president who closed the Cultural Center in 1935. With its white Moorish architecture (Art Deco), red roofs, and lively gardens, it is considered by some to be the most beautiful building in Ensenada.

La Bufadora

It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ensenada. The marine geyser is located 35 km south of the city and the resulting phenomenon of "spitting" water is produced by the waves of the sea that enter through an underwater canyon, violently expelling the water through a crack, causing an explosion of water and air that can reach up to 30 meters high. The resulting noise gives its name to La Bufadora, which, according to legend, is due to the spouting of a gray whale calf trapped between the rocks, now turned to stone. During your visit, we recommend tasting the traditional sugary churros and coconuts prepared with fruit and seafood.

Hussong Cantina

One of Ensenada's most iconic spots is Hussong Cantina, a legendary spot where the stories of its customers blend reality and fantasy. During your visit, you'll enjoy live music performed by banda and norteño groups, as well as premium alcoholic beverages. In the past, the cantina was visited by celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Steve McQueen, who may have been drawn to the Margarita cocktail, invented by Carlos Orozco, the bartender at Hussong's. It is said that the bartender named the cocktail as a tribute to Margarita Henkel, the daughter of the German ambassador who lived in the city and was fortunate enough to try the "experiment."
